Ganesh Chaturthi is that auspicious day when Lord Ganesha is worshiped, as he is the God of prosperity, good fortune, intelligence and wisdom. It is believed that Lord Ganesha was born to Mata Parvati during the Shukla Paksha (bright half) in the month of Bhadrapada. As per the Gregorian calendar, the day of Ganesh Chaturthi falls in the month of August or September. Hence, the annual and the biggest Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as per that time.

There are two fortnights in a lunar month, hence Chaturthi (fourth day) comes twice in a month. The Chaturthi coming in the bright half is known as Vinayak Chaturthi. This is also known as “Varad Vinayaka Chaturthi”. Varad means ‘boon’. Those keeping fast on this auspicious day are showered with wisdom and intelligence by Lord Ganesha. These two are very important qualities in everyone.

On Vinayaka Chaturthi, Ganesh Puja is performed in the afternoon, which is the mid time of the day. Fast observed on this day depends on the time of sunrise and sunset. Devotees fast for the entire day and eat only fruits and certain vegetables.  For worship, devotees do the “Ganesh Atharwashish Path”.
