MahaShivratri is a festival, celebrated annually with devotion and religious enthusiasm by worshipping Lord Shiva.
In Hindu calendar, the arrival of summer marks the Mahashivratri which means "The Great Night of Shiva".
Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati on this day. It is said that after the demise of Sati, Lord Shiva went into deep meditation. Sati reincarnated as Parvati to become the consort of Lord Shiva.
Hence, MahaShivratri marks the union of Shiva and Parvati on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun. MahaShivratri is a solemn event notable for its introspective focus, fasting, meditation on Lord Shiva, self-study, social harmony and an all-night vigil at Shiva temples.
The festival is particularly significant in the Shaivism tradition of Hinduism, as it marks the day when Lord Shiva is believed to have performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction.
It is worth noting that the spiritual benefits of performing an Abhishek on MahaShivaratri, or any other time, depending on the individual's intention and devotion. The act is considered a way of expressing devotion and seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Puranas say that Lord Ram had made, installed and performed a Parthiv Shivling Puja at Rameshwaram, to be freed from Brahma Hatya Maha Patakam, the sin of killing a Brahmin as Ravan was a Brahmin. Another legend is about Shani Dev who performed the Parthiv Puja to gain more power over his father, Surya.
Sieved mud/clay is mixed with bhasma, honey or jaggery, chandan paste and molded into a Shivling. Twelve Parthiv Shivlings are made and worshipped. Then the Pranpratishta of the Parthiv Shivlings is done, and they are ritually worshipped. The Shivling size ideally should not be more than the size of the thumb of the devotee.
