The word Gaumukhi in Sanskrit means in the shape of a cow's mouth. It is a small bag that resembles the shape of a cow's mouth.
A Gaumukhi should be used when one is chanting Mantras. As per the Shastra, the Mala should not be visible to others and prevents other people from interfering or becoming curious about your practice.
The mala and your right hand are both placed inside the Gaumukhi so that they are obscured from view.
