According to Hindu scriptures Guru or Brihaspati is the Guru of Devas, personification of piety and religion, represented as the Purohit of the Gods with whom he intercedes for human beings. He is of Sattva Guna and represents knowledge and teaching. He is often known simply as "Guru".
According to Vedic astrology he is the Karaka of wisdom, intellect and eloquence, fate, fortune, children. His Tattva or element is Akash or ether, and his direction is north-east. Guru Dosha leads to poverty, selfishness, hurdles in education and begetting children, if badly placed in the natal horoscope. He presides over Guruvaar, Brihaspativaar or Thursday.
