Guru Purnima Puja

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुर्साक्षात्‍परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥

The above Shloka delineates the importance of the Guru. The word Guru in Sanskrit means – the dispeller of darkness. Hence a Guru dispels darkness of ignorance and leads the disciples on the path to wisdom and enlightenment. Patiently inculcating in the disciple a disciplined and a spiritual way of life, a Guru emphasizes the importance of meditation, right conduct, right action, and right thoughts; with the intention of making the disciple a better conduit for receiving spiritual wisdom while still living in the material world. While observing Guru Purnima, a disciple will fast and meditate most of the day. One may make a pilgrimage, present gifts to the Guru, or read Holy Scriptures, but most of the day is spent in spiritual contemplation. Such is the importance of Guru that not only human beings but even for the Devtas and the Rakshasas need the guidance and blessings of a Guru. Therefore, the name Dev Guru has been assigned to Brihaspati and Daitya Guru to Shukracharya respectively.

Guru Poornima is celebrated on the full Moon day of the month of Aashaadh (July-August). It is believed that on this day Lord Shiva imparted the Yog Shastra (the science of understanding the mechanics of the human body. The journey therefore is from created to the creator.) to the Saptarishis (the seven sages) on this day & therefore Lord Shiva is known as Adi Guru or the Adi Yogi. According to Shastras, Lord Krishna an incarnation of Lord Vishnu is also considered as the Jagad Guru because he gave the divine Bhagwat Gita for the welfare of mankind. Rishi Veda Vyasa was born on this day and was the narrator of Mahabharata & he also compiled and edited all the four Vedas.
