Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is the birthday of Shri Krishna which is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country. It is believed that lord Vishnu reincarnated in the form of lord Krishna on the auspicious day of Janmashtami. He was born at midnight on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in the month of Shravan.
As per scriptures, when negative forces unleashed evil all over the world, Mother Earth implored Shri Brahma to put an end to it and unburden her from the heavy weight of evil. Brahma took this concern of Mother Earth to Shri Vishnu. He in turn assured Brahma of his birth on earth to purge it from all evil doers. As promised the eighth Avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born to Devaki and Vasudev in Mathura.
On this auspicious occasion, the idol of Bal Gopal is placed in the cradle and consecrated with Panchamrut, Gangajal, sandalwood paste and other auspicious ingredients. Then the idol is bedecked with fragrant flowers and Tulsi leaves after which Naivaidyam is offered. This Panchamrut and Naivaidyam is distributed among the devotees as Prasad. Devotees joyously swing the cradle and welcome the blessings of Krishna in their lives. Bhagwat Mahapuran and Bhagwat Gita are recited in temples and home of devotees.
The life of Shri Krishna exemplifies him as friend, philosopher and guide to his devotees. He is the celestial lover, flute maestro par excellence, which mesmerizes the entire cosmos, the supreme enchanter. The assurance that he had given to Shri Brahma echoes on battlefield in Kurukshetra and the Bhagwat Gita,
Meaning: Whenever there is decay of righteousness, O Bharat, and unrighteousness prevails, then I Myself come forth; for the protection of the good, for the destruction of evil-doers, for the sake of firmly establishing righteousness, I am born from age to age.
Hence Shri Krishna is known as Yug Purush and Jagad Guru.
