However, Shiva, unwavering in his vow of celibacy, initially declined her proposal. Parvati’s heartache knew no bounds, and she embarked on a journey filled with trials and tribulations in pursuit of her beloved Shiva.

Witnessing Parvati’s profound suffering, Lord Shiva, moved by her unwavering devotion, relented and agreed to marry her. The grand union took place at the palace of King Himavat, Parvati’s father and the ruler of the majestic Himalayas. During the celestial wedding, Shiva revealed his awe-inspiring and fearsome cosmic form, causing Menavati, Parvati’s mother, to faint in awe and terror.

In response to the overwhelming spectacle, Parvati transformed into the formidable Goddess Chandraghanta, stunning all present, including Shiva himself. Moved by her divine intervention, Parvati implored Shiva to return to his tranquil and charming form. In response to her plea, Shiva transformed into a youthful and captivating deity. Menavati, touched by Shiva’s grace, regained her composure and found joy in her daughter’s divine marriage ceremony.

The Symbolic Features of Devi Chandraghanta

Goddess Chandraghanta, bedecked in a golden hue, astride a majestic lion symbolizing “dharma,” possesses ten hands and three all-seeing eyes. Eight of her hands bear formidable weapons, while the remaining two extend in the mudras of benevolence and protection. Poised for battle, she radiates supreme bliss and knowledge, ushering in peace and serenity akin to a cool moonlit breeze. Her benevolent blessings dispel sorrows and awaken the latent warrior within her devotees.

Chandraghanta Puja Vidhi

The worship of Goddess Chandraghanta on the third night of Navratri is a sacred ritual rich in symbolism and devotion. Devotees typically use a shallow clay pan as the sacred base for the puja. The pan is filled with three layers of mud, atop which Sapta Dhanya/Navadhanya (grains) seeds are sprinkled. A gentle sprinkle of water moistens the seeds to foster growth.

A holy water pot, known as a Kalasha, is placed within this arrangement, filled with Ganga jal, betel nuts, coins, Akshat (raw rice mixed with turmeric powder), and Durva grass. The neck of the Kalash is adorned with five mango leaves and is crowned with a coconut.
