Akshaya Tritiya 2025: A Path to Abundance and Prosperity

Akshaya Tritiya is a sacred day in Jainism and Hinduism, renowned for being related to prosperity, fortune, and new beginnings. Any activity performed during this day will flourish and yield long-term profits, as everyone declares it holy for charity, business, and worship. Hence, many people believe in purchasing gold, investing in real estate, and welcoming new investments on this day of Akshay Tritriya.

The term ‘Akshaya’ (akṣaya/अक्षय) in Sanskrit combines ‘A’ (not) and ‘Kshaya’ (erode), signifying something that doesn’t decay or diminish. And ‘Tritiya’ (tṛtīyā/ तृतीया) refers to the third lunar day in the traditional Hindu calendar. Thus, Akshaya Tritiya is a festival of unerodable blessings celebrated on the third lunar day of the Vaishakha month (April-May).

Stories related to the origin of Akshaya Tritiya:

  • The appearance of Mata Lakshmi: On this auspicious day, during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Kṣīrasāgara/ क्षीरसागर), Mata Lakshmi emerged and was declared the deity of wealth and prosperity.
  • Birth of Lord Parshuram: This day is also celebrated as Parshuram Jayanti. The 6th incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu, Parshuram, is said to have been born on Akshaya Tritiya. Though a Brahmin, he possessed the warrior qualities of a Kshatriya. He is well known for eliminating sinful rulers and bringing peace and harmony into the world.

O Kesava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari, who has assumed the form of Bhrgupati [Parasurama]! All glories to You! At Kuruksetra, You bathe the earth in the rivers of blood from the bodies of the demoniac ksatriyas that You have slain. You wash away the sins of the world, and because of You, people are relieved from the blazing fire of material existence.

  • Sudama’s Humble Offering to Krishna: On the day of Akshaya Tritiya, Sudama, a poor friend of Shree Krishna, visited him with a handful of parched rice. Krishna, touched by his devotion, transformed Sudama’s hut into a palace, symbolizing the concept of Akshaya Nidhi (eternal wealth). The story of Sudama taught us the importance of compassion, friendship, and the act of humble offering over materialistic wealth.
  • Yudhishthira Blessed with the Akshaya Patra: During the Pandavas’ exile, Yudhishthira struggled to feed numerous sages who followed them. One of the sages advised him to pray to Suryadev for help. On this very auspicious day, Suryadeva is believed to have bestowed upon Yudhishthira the Akshaya Patra, a magical vessel that never ran out of food until Draupadi had her last meal of the day.
  • Mahabharata as Narrated by Ved Vyasa: Ved Vyasa, the author of Mahabharata, envisioned the epic in his mind. He wanted someone to transcribe it for him. He sought help from the creator Brahma, who suggested Lord Ganesha was fit for the act. Ganesha agreed on two conditions: that Ved Vyasa should narrate the epic without any pause and that he would only pen it down after understanding each word of the Mahabharat. Hence, Ved Vyasa began narrating the epic Mahabharata to the gods and goddesses on Akshaya Tritiya, with Lord Ganesha writing it down. During the transcription, Ganesha broke his pen, but determined to pen down the whole narration, he broke his tusk and wrote the entire Mahabharata.
  • Annapurna’s Appearance: Goddess Parvati witnessed the suffering of the world due to the lack of food. Touched by this, she manifested Mata Annapurna, the Goddess of food and nourishment, and reappeared in Kashi (present-day Varanasi), opening a kitchen to distribute food to anyone who came to her. Upon hearing about the kitchen, Shiva approached her with a begging bowl. It is believed that on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, Annapurna, the goddess of food and nourishment, fed Lord Shiva.
