Kartik maas is often called the holiest month of the Hindu year.

In 2026, Kartik maas begins on 27 October & ends with Kartik Purnima on 24 November, as per the North Indian (Purnimanta) calendar.

It is a month of lamps, early morning baths, tulsi worship & quiet devotion, when Shiva & Vishnu are honoured together. Within these thirty days fall Diwali, Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah & Dev Diwali. Here is a gentle guide to what Kartik maas means & how you can bring its blessings into your daily life.

Key takeaways

  • Kartik maas 2026 runs from 27 October to 24 November in the North Indian calendar, & from 10 November to 8 December in the Amanta calendar followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat & South India

  • It is the rare month devoted to both Shiva & Vishnu, & is named after Lord Kartikeya

  • Deepdaan (offering lamps), Kartik snan (the early morning bath) & daily tulsi puja are its three core practices

  • Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj, Chhath, Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah & Kartik Purnima all fall within this month

  • Simple, steady devotion matters more than elaborate ritual

What is Kartik maas & when does it fall in 2026?

Kartik maas is the eighth month of the Hindu lunar calendar. It usually falls between October & November, as autumn settles in & the evenings grow longer.

The month is counted in two ways across India:

  • North India (Purnimanta): 27 October to 24 November 2026, from the day after Sharad Purnima to Kartik Purnima
  • Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh (Amanta): 10 November to 8 December 2026, from the day after Diwali Amavasya to Kartik Amavasya

The major festivals fall on the same dates in both systems. Only the way the month is counted changes.

Why Kartik maas is called the holiest month

The Skanda Purana says no month is equal to Kartik. The Padma Purana describes even one lamp lit with faith during this month as deeply meritorious.

What makes Kartik maas special is that it belongs to both Shiva & Vishnu. Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month yogic sleep on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, ending Chaturmas. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Tripurari, who vanquished the demon Tripurasura on Kartik Purnima. Devotees of both traditions come together in the same thirty days, often at the same altar.

The month is also named after Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva & Parvati, & the commander of the divine army.

Stories of Kartik maas

Kartik maas is woven with stories from the Puranas, each one holding a quiet lesson in faith & devotion.

Shiva as Tripurari The demon Tripurasura ruled three flying cities that could be destroyed only by a single arrow, at the rare moment when all three came into one line. On Kartik Purnima, Lord Shiva released that one arrow & freed the worlds from his tyranny. The gods descended to Kashi & lit lamps in celebration, which is why Dev Diwali glows on the ghats of Varanasi even today.

Vishnu’s awakening On Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu enters his yogic sleep on Sheshnag for four months, known as Chaturmas. He awakens on Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartik maas. This is why weddings & new beginnings resume only after this day.

Tulsi & Shaligram Vrinda was a devoted wife whose purity protected her husband, the demon Jalandhar. When Lord Vishnu broke that protection to restore balance, Vrinda cursed him to become a stone, the Shaligram, & she herself took the form of the tulsi plant. Moved by her devotion, Vishnu took her as his consort, & Tulsi Vivah celebrates this sacred union every Kartik.

Krishna as Damodar When little Krishna broke a pot of butter, mother Yashoda tried to tie him to a grinding mortar. Every rope fell two fingers short, until Krishna saw her love & effort & allowed himself to be bound. The rope around his waist gave him the name Damodar, & Kartik is also called Damodar maas.

Kartikeya & Tarakasura The demon Tarakasura had a boon that only a son of Shiva could defeat him. Lord Kartikeya was born to fulfil this, led the divine army & vanquished him. Skanda Shashti, celebrated as Soora Samharam in South India, honours this victory.

Krishna & Satyabhama In the Padma Purana, Lord Krishna shares the glory of Kartik maas with Satyabhama, & these teachings came to be known as the Kartik Mahatmya. Krishna & Satyabhama together defeated the demon Narakasura, which is remembered on Narak Chaturdashi.

The Matsya avatar Kartik Purnima is also remembered as the day Lord Vishnu took his first avatar, Matsya, the divine fish. He guided the sage Manu, the seeds of all life & the Vedas safely through the great flood.

Japa & reading of scriptures Many devotees chant the Vishnu Sahasranama, Om Namah Shivaya or the Damodarashtakam, & read the Kartik Mahatmya through the month.

Daan (giving) Donating food, lamps, warm clothes & grain is considered especially meritorious in Kartik maas.

Kartik maas & Rudraksha

6 Mukhi Rudraksha, associated with Lord Kartikeya, worn during Kartik maas 2026

As a month sacred to Lord Shiva, Kartik maas is a lovely time to begin wearing Rudraksha or to deepen an existing practice. Rudraksha is described in the shastras as the tears of Lord Shiva, & devotees have long worn it during japa, meditation & daily prayer.

If you already wear Rudraksha, you may simply offer it to Shiva on a Kartik Somvar or on Kartik Purnima, & continue your japa through the month. Since the month is named after Lord Kartikeya, many devotees also feel a connection with the 6 Mukhi Rudraksha, which represents him.

If you are wondering which Rudraksha suits you, Rudralife recommends beads based on a date of birth analysis using astro-numerology. And if you prefer to see Rudraksha in person, come visit us.
