What is 3 Mukhi Rudraksha?

A mukhi is a natural line that runs from the top of a Rudraksha bead to its base. The number of lines decides the mukhi, & each mukhi carries the blessings of a particular deity. A 3 Mukhi Rudraksha has three natural lines.

The old epics say the whole universe moves by the power of three, & The Power of Rudraksha calls the 3 Mukhi the symbolic seed of this power. Where the 2 Mukhi stands for two becoming one, the 3 Mukhi stands for the fire that burns away what is past so something new can begin.

The story of Rudraksha

Lord Shiva in meditation wearing a Rudraksha mala, the sacred origin of 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

The Shiva Purana tells that Lord Shiva sat in deep meditation for thousands of years for the welfare of all beings. When he opened his eyes, tears of compassion fell to the earth, & from those tears grew the Rudraksha trees.

The name carries the story within it. Rudra is a name of Shiva, & aksha means eyes or tears. Every Rudraksha is, in this sense, a tear of Shiva, & the 3 Mukhi Rudraksha carries that grace as the purifying fire of Agni.

Ruling deity of 3 Mukhi Rudraksha: Agni

The ruling deity of the 3 Mukhi Rudraksha is Agni, the god of fire. He is also known as Mahajwala, the great flame, & Saptajihva, the one with seven tongues.

In every yagna, it is Agni who receives the offerings & carries them to the devas, which is why he is also called Hutabhuk. Fire consumes everything it touches, yet it stays pure & full of power. In the same way, the 3 Mukhi Rudraksha is believed to purify the wearer of the burden of past deeds.

The Power of Rudraksha describes the bead as Agnisambhoot, born of fire, & says it helps keep the soul pure so a devotee can live without guilt. The Padma Purana gives a second association, assigning the bead to Brahm, the Supreme Lord, & describing it as resolving life’s problems & bringing success.

Scripture mentions of 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

The 3 Mukhi Rudraksha is described in the Shrimad Devi Bhagavatam:

Shrimad Devi Bhagavatam, chapter 7, shloka 26

According to the Shrimad Devi Bhagavatam, the 3 Mukhi Rudraksha is the form of the three sacred fires, & Agni is always pleased with the one who wears it.

Benefits of 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

A genuine 3 Mukhi Rudraksha carries the purifying grace of Agni, which is why its benefits are spoken of in terms of letting go, renewal & inner strength.

General benefits

  • It is traditionally worn for fearlessness & self-confidence.
  • It is believed to ease low self-esteem & strengthen inner determination.
  • It is believed to lift laziness & self-doubt, bringing fresh energy to work & daily life.
  • Tradition holds that it eases the challenging influence of Mars, such as land disputes & accidents.
  • It is believed to help devotees move past obstacles & toward success.

Spiritual benefits

  • The scriptures say it frees the wearer from past sins & the burden of past karma.
  • It is traditionally worn by those carrying guilt, fear, resentment or mental strain.
  • It is believed to encourage a positive, hopeful outlook & the courage to start afresh.
  • It is traditionally associated with the Manipura (solar plexus) chakra, though the bead itself is worn at the heart.

Health benefits

  • Wearers often speak of renewed energy & less fatigue.
  • Tradition associates it with healthy blood & circulation, & with support for those who feel weak or low on energy.
  • The Power of Rudraksha mentions it for comfort in the stomach, the eyes & the skin.
  • The Power of Rudraksha notes that a child who often runs a fever or feels very weak may wear three beads around the neck, alongside a doctor’s care, & that for children below six, even one bead may help.

Rudralife’s Note: The benefits described here come from scripture, tradition & what devotees have shared with us over the years. They are not medical claims, & a Rudraksha should never replace care from a qualified doctor.

Who should wear 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

Adults & children alike can wear a 3 Mukhi Rudraksha. It is especially suited to:

  • Those seeking freedom from past karma, guilt or emotional burdens.
  • Students, teachers, leaders & professionals who want clarity, confidence & self-belief.
  • Those facing stress, low energy or the fear of failure.
  • Those who wish to bring positivity & balance into their lives & surroundings.
  • Those who wish to rekindle motivation & inner strength to begin afresh.
  • Parents seeking protection & steady health for children who fall ill often.

The Power of Rudraksha also notes how many beads are traditionally worn: one bead for children below six, three beads for older children & up to nine Nepal beads for adults. A mala of 54+1 smaller Indonesian beads is also popular.

The 3 Mukhi Rudraksha, Mars & astro-numerology

The 3 Mukhi Rudraksha is associated with Mars. In astro-numerology, Mars rules Mulank 9, the root number of those born on the 9th, 18th or 27th of any month.

Having Mulank 9 does not mean a devotee needs a Mars bead. A Rudraksha for Mars becomes relevant only when Mars’s influence in a devotee’s life needs balancing. Rudralife’s recommendations are based on a date-of-birth analysis using astro-numerology, which looks at the full picture rather than a single number.

Beej mantra of 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

Rudralife recommends the beej mantra given in the Shiva Purana:

ॐ क्लीं नमः · Om Kleem Namah

The Power of Rudraksha lists several others for this bead:

  • Om Om Namah, from the Padma Purana
  • Om Dhum Dhum Namah, from the Skanda Purana
  • Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
  • Om Namah Shivaya, the panchakshari mantra dear to Shiva

The beej mantra is traditionally chanted 108 times on a Rudraksha mala, ideally on a Monday morning after bathing. A devotee can choose any one of these mantras & chant it with steady devotion.

Nepal & Indonesian 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

The 3 Mukhi Rudraksha grows in Nepal & Indonesia, & The Power of Rudraksha also refers to a Haridwar & Dehradun variety. The Nepal bead is larger, with three deep, clear lines. The Indonesian bead is much smaller, & The Power of Rudraksha notes it may work at a similar or slightly lesser level than the Nepal bead, so the number of beads worn should be kept in mind.

Rudralife offers the 3 Mukhi from Nepal, graded by size:

  • Nepal 3 Mukhi, Small: 12 mm to 15 mm
  • Nepal 3 Mukhi, large: 15 mm to 18 mm
  • Nepal 3 Mukhi, Collector: above 18 mm

How to test a 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

3 Mukhi Rudraksha X-ray at RRTL, Rudralife's ISO 9001:2015 lab, showing seed chambers

The only reliable test for any Rudraksha, including a 3 Mukhi Rudraksha, is an X-ray. Inside a genuine Rudraksha, each mukhi line on the surface has its own seed compartment. An X-ray makes these compartments visible, so the count inside can be matched with the lines outside.

A genuine 3 Mukhi Rudraksha shows three seed compartments that match its three lines. A bead whose lines have been altered, or a bead carved from another seed, cannot hide its true structure from an X-ray.

  • What works: an X-ray report from a trusted lab, showing the image of the bead itself.
  • What does not work: the water test, where a bead is dropped in water to see whether it sinks or floats. Popular home tests like this cannot confirm authenticity, & some can damage the bead.
  • What to ask a seller: whether the X-ray image belongs to the exact bead being sold, & which lab issued it.

For 26 years, Rudralife has verified every bead by X-ray at RRTL, its own ISO 9001:2015 lab, before it reaches devotees.

How to wear 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

Devotee offering a Rudraksha mala at a Shivling on a Monday before wearing 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

Wearing a 3 Mukhi Rudraksha is simple. Rudralife’s wear guide:

  • Day: begin as early as you can. Monday, or any day auspicious to Bhagwan Shiv, is recommended. Many scriptures also consider Amavasya, a grahan (eclipse) or a Pradosh day auspicious for wearing Rudraksha.
  • Beej mantra: chant Om Kleem Namah before wearing.
  • How to wear: wear it touching the skin, ideally as a pendant close to the heart (Anahata) chakra.
  • Thread or capping: string it in a thread, or set it in a silver or gold cap.

Do’s & don’ts after wearing 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

Do’s

  • Wear your Rudraksha with respect & a positive intention.
  • Wear it as long as possible so the bead stays in touch with your skin. You can remove it at night if it feels uncomfortable while sleeping.
  • Cleanse it every one to three months with lukewarm water, then apply a light coat of almond or coconut oil with a soft brush.
  • Women can wear Rudraksha during their menstrual cycle. The scriptures mention no restriction, though it depends on personal belief & faith.

Don’ts

  • Don’t share, or wear, a Rudraksha mala used by someone else.
  • You may remove it while eating non-vegetarian food or drinking alcohol & wear it again afterwards. This depends on personal belief, as the scriptures also say Rudraksha can be worn at all times.
  • Remove it during intimacy & when visiting cremation grounds.
  • Remove it before bathing, as soap can dry out the bead, & wear it again afterwards.

How to style 3 Mukhi Rudraksha

A bead of courage & fresh starts can be part of everyday life, worn quietly or as a visible expression of faith.

  • As a pendant: a single bead in a silver or gold cap on a fine chain suits both office & ethnic wear.
  • On a thread: a single bead on a thread sits quietly under a shirt or kurta, close to the heart.
  • As a bracelet: a Rudraksha bracelet keeps the bead close through the day, for men & women alike.
  • For children: a single bead on a soft thread can be worn comfortably around a child’s neck.

Rudraksha care guide

With a little care, a Rudraksha stays healthy for a lifetime. Rudralife’s experts recommend:

Cleaning & maintenance

  • Clean the bead with plain water regularly to remove dust.
  • If the bead looks whitish or dry, it needs oiling. A light coat of almond or coconut oil prevents it from drying out.
  • Regular oiling keeps the bead hydrated & protects it from fungus & insects.
  • Avoid leaving the bead neglected for long periods.
  • Keep it from touching the ground, & store it in a sacred place when not worn.

Energising your Rudraksha

Energisation is complete before your bead reaches you. Every Rudralife bead goes through ACE before dispatch, so nothing is left for you to activate. The practices below are for devotees who wish to keep their own daily connection with the bead.

  • For a single bead, chant its beej mantra, Om Kleem Namah.
  • For a combination or mala, chant Om Namah Shivaya, the universal mantra for all Rudraksha, 11 times.
  • You can also touch the Rudraksha to a Shivling while chanting Om Namah Shivaya 11 times.

ACE energisation & Vedic puja

Genuine is not the same as energised. A bead can be completely original & pass every authenticity test, yet still reach a devotee as just a bead.

Years of working closely with Rudraksha taught Rudralife that authentication alone was never going to be enough, so over the past three years, it has researched what it would truly take to go beyond genuine.

The result is ACE, Aura Certified Energized Rudraksha.

  • 1,25,000 chants: every bead that enters ACE is energised with its own Vedic beej mantra, chanted 1,25,000 times in a controlled environment.
  • Aura testing: each bead is aura-tested before & after energisation, so the process is confirmed on every bead, not just on paper.
  • Sealed & protected: once ACE-approved, the bead is vacuum-sealed, stored with minimal human contact & opened only when a devotee personally selects it.
  • Final puja vidhi: after selection, a final puja vidhi is performed as prescribed in the Shiva Purana.

Devotees who have received ACE beads often share that their experience went well beyond that of a regular Rudraksha. What reaches you is not only original, but tested, energised & prepared for your journey, ready to wear the moment it arrives.

Over 26 years, Rudralife has also conducted Vedic pujas for Bhagwan Shiv & the devatas. In a Vedic puja, pandits perform each puja according to Vedic vidhi vidhan, speaking the devotee’s name & gotra in the sankalp wherever they are.

The puja is streamed live on YouTube so devotees anywhere can watch, & each devotee receives mahaprasad energised in the puja itself.
