What is 5 Mukhi Rudraksha?
A mukhi is a natural line that runs from the top of a Rudraksha bead to its base. The number of lines decides the mukhi, & each mukhi carries the blessings of a particular deity. A 5 Mukhi Rudraksha has five natural lines.
The number five runs through the bead’s meaning: the five faces of Mahadev, the five syllables of Namah Shivaya, & the five deeds seen in everyday life, which The Power of Rudraksha names as creation, preservation, destruction, detachment & obligation.
The 5 Mukhi is so central to Rudraksha that, as The Power of Rudraksha notes, the word Rudraksha on its own is usually taken to mean a 5 Mukhi, unless another mukhi is named. Most malas are made of 5 Mukhi beads, & most combinations include at least one.
Representing Kalagni Rudra, this bead is associated with blessings of peace, protection & inner purification.

The story of Rudraksha

The Shiva Purana tells that Lord Shiva sat in deep meditation for thousands of years for the welfare of all beings. When he opened his eyes, tears of compassion fell to the earth, & from those tears grew the Rudraksha trees.
The name carries the story within it. Rudra is a name of Shiva, & aksha means eyes or tears. Every Rudraksha is, in this sense, a tear of Shiva, & the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha carries that grace most directly, as the bead of Shiva himself.
Ruling deity of 5 Mukhi Rudraksha: Kalagni Rudra
The ruling deity of the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is Kalagni Rudra, the fierce yet compassionate form of Lord Shiva whose fire burns away what is impure & restores balance. Some describe this bead as Rudra-Kalagni.
The Power of Rudraksha describes the five forms of Shiva, Sadyojaat, Ishaan, Tatpurush, Aghor & Vaamdev, as living within the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha. In his Panch Mahadev form, Shiva has five faces, & the fifth face points upward, towards spiritual progress.
The Panchakshari mantra, Namah Shivaya, is said to have evolved from this five-faced form of Shiva, with the Pranava Om as its companion. This is why the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha holds a special place in any sadhana or meditation.
As per the Padma Purana, The Power of Rudraksha notes that wearing a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is important for all, as it is blessed by Vaamdev (Shiva), & that its wearer is honoured by the gods themselves for a long time. Because it is governed by Jupiter, Vrihaspati, the guru of the devas, the bead is also likened to a devguru.
Scripture mentions of 5 Mukhi Rudraksha
The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is described in the Shiva Purana:
॥ पंचवक्त्रः स्वयं रुद्रः कालाग्निर्नामतः प्रभुः सर्वमुक्तिप्रदश्चैव सर्वकामफलप्रदः ॥
शिव पुराण अ. २५, श्लो. ६९ · Shiva Purana, chapter 25, shloka 69
According to the Shiva Purana, the five-faced bead is Rudra himself, known as Kalagni, the lord. It grants liberation from all bondages & fulfils every righteous wish of the wearer.
The Shrimad Devi Bhagavat also speaks of this bead:
Panchvaktraha swayam rudraha kalagnirnamataha; agamyagamanam chaiva tatha chabhakshyabhakshanam; muchyate naatra sandeham panchvaktraha dharanaat.
According to the Devi Bhagavat, the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha, known as Kalagni Rudra, frees the wearer, without doubt, from the sins of forbidden conduct & forbidden food.

Who should wear 5 Mukhi Rudraksha
Anyone can wear a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha, at any age. It is one of the most commonly worn Rudraksha & is suited to children & elders alike. The bead is especially suited to:
- Those who wish to experience Rudraksha for the first time. The Power of Rudraksha suggests a mala of 7 mm to 10 mm beads, or three large 5 Mukhi beads.
- Students, counsellors & meditators, who work with knowledge, discipline or self-reflection.
- Professionals under stress, & those who often feel anger, restlessness or overthinking.
- Those who wish to deepen their sadhana, meditation or japa.
- Those who wish to bring Jupiter’s influence into balance.
- Devotees who wish to stay close to Shiva every day, as the bead of Shiva himself.
The Power of Rudraksha notes that the 5 Mukhi is usually worn in a set of no fewer than three beads. Beads below 7 mm are mostly ornamental, & malas are usually made in 27+1, 54+1 or 108+1 beads, where the last bead is the meru. Some devotees also wear an 81+1 mala, as 81 is a multiple of 27.
The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha, Jupiter & astro-numerology
The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is associated with Jupiter. In astro-numerology, Jupiter rules Mulank 3, the root number of those born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th of any month.
Having Mulank 3 does not mean a devotee needs a Jupiter bead. A Rudraksha for Jupiter becomes relevant only when Jupiter’s influence in a devotee’s life needs balancing. Rudralife’s recommendations are based on a date-of-birth analysis using astro-numerology, which looks at the full picture rather than a single number.

Beej mantra of 5 Mukhi Rudraksha
Rudralife recommends the beej mantra given in the Shiva Purana:
ॐ ह्रीं नमः · Om Hreem Namah
The Power of Rudraksha lists several others for this bead:
- Om Hoom Namah, from the Mantra Maharnava & Padma Purana
- Om Hreem Hoom Namah, from the Skanda Purana
- Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
- Om Namah Shivaya, the panchakshari mantra that evolved from Shiva’s five-faced form
The beej mantra is traditionally chanted 108 times on a Rudraksha mala, ideally on a Monday morning after bathing. A devotee can choose any one of these mantras & chant it with steady devotion.

Nepal & Indonesian 5 Mukhi Rudraksha
The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha grows in Nepal & Indonesia, & makes up about 60% to 70% of all Rudraksha grown.
- Indonesian 5 Mukhi: smaller beads, from about 4 mm to 15 mm, usually worn as malas.
- Nepal 5 Mukhi: larger beads, from about 15 mm up to 30 mm. The Power of Rudraksha notes that beads from the Pali area of Nepal are considered the biggest.
Rudralife offers the 5 Mukhi from Nepal, & its japa malas are made with Indonesian beads.
How to test a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha

The only reliable test for any Rudraksha, including a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha, is an X-ray. Inside a genuine Rudraksha, each mukhi line on the surface has its own seed compartment. An X-ray makes these compartments visible, so the count inside can be matched with the lines outside.
A genuine 5 Mukhi Rudraksha shows five seed compartments that match its five lines. A bead whose lines have been altered, or a bead carved from another seed, cannot hide its true structure from an X-ray.
- What works: an X-ray report from a trusted lab, showing the image of the bead itself.
- What does not work: the water test, where a bead is dropped in water to see whether it sinks or floats. Popular home tests like this cannot confirm authenticity, & some can damage the bead.
- What to ask a seller: whether the X-ray image belongs to the exact bead being sold, & which lab issued it.
For 26 years, Rudralife has verified every bead by X-ray at RRTL, its own ISO 9001:2015 lab, before it reaches devotees.

If you have extra 5 Mukhi beads
Because the 5 Mukhi is so common, many families collect more beads than they wear, through gifts or over the years. we suggests using them rather than leaving them to dry out in a locker:
- Select the best beads & make a kantha of 27+1 or 32 beads, in wool, silver or any metal, & start wearing it.
- Gift the beads, or offer them to a temple with a request to make a garland for Lord Shiva.
- Place them on a photograph of a god or goddess.
- Immerse any damaged beads respectfully in flowing or natural water, such as a well, lake or river.
Rudralife expert guidance
Over 26 years, Rudralife has developed its own system of astro-numerology, which guides devotees around the world to the right Rudraksha combination based on their date of birth & needs. All mukhis can be worn together, so a combination can be shaped around a devotee’s life without any conflict between beads.
Unlike gemstones, a Rudraksha is always positive in its action. Wearing a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha, or any authentic Rudraksha, has no adverse effects, so devotees can wear it with complete peace of mind.

How to wear 5 Mukhi Rudraksha

Wearing a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is simple. Rudralife’s wear guide:
- Day: begin as early as you can. Monday, or any day auspicious to Bhagwan Shiv, is recommended. Many scriptures also consider Amavasya, a grahan (eclipse) or a Pradosh day auspicious for wearing Rudraksha.
- Beej mantra: chant Om Hreem Namah before wearing.
- How to wear: wear it touching the skin, ideally as a pendant close to the heart (Anahata) chakra.
- Thread or capping: string it in a thread, or set it in a silver or gold cap.
Do’s & don’ts after wearing 5 Mukhi Rudraksha
Do’s
- Wear your Rudraksha with respect & a positive intention.
- Wear it as long as possible so the bead stays in touch with your skin. You can remove it at night if it feels uncomfortable while sleeping.
- Cleanse it every one to three months with lukewarm water, then apply a light coat of almond or coconut oil with a soft brush.
- Women can wear Rudraksha during their menstrual cycle. The scriptures mention no restriction, though it depends on personal belief & faith.
Don’ts
- Don’t share your Rudraksha for casual wear. A mala passed down in the family, such as a Siddha Mala kept as an heirloom, can be worn by the next generation.
- You may remove it while eating non-vegetarian food or drinking alcohol & wear it again afterwards. This depends on personal belief, as the scriptures also say Rudraksha can be worn at all times.
- Remove it during intimacy & when visiting cremation grounds.
- Remove it before bathing, as soap can dry out the bead, & wear it again afterwards.
How to style 5 Mukhi Rudraksha
A bead of peace & Shiva’s grace can be part of everyday life, worn quietly or as a visible expression of faith.
- As a pendant: a single bead in a silver or gold cap on a fine chain suits both office & ethnic wear.
- As a kantha: a kantha of large 5 Mukhi beads sits close to the throat & heart, for daily wear or meditation.
- As a mala: a mala of smaller beads can be worn every day & used for japa.
- As a bracelet: a Rudraksha bracelet keeps the bead close through the day, for men & women alike.

Rudraksha care guide
With a little care, a Rudraksha stays healthy for a lifetime. Rudralife’s experts recommend:
Cleaning & maintenance
- Clean the bead with plain water regularly to remove dust.
- If the bead looks whitish or dry, it needs oiling. A light coat of almond or coconut oil prevents it from drying out.
- Regular oiling keeps the bead hydrated & protects it from fungus & insects.
- Avoid leaving the bead neglected for long periods.
- Keep it from touching the ground, & store it in a sacred place when not worn.
Energising your Rudraksha
Energisation is complete before your bead reaches you. Every Rudralife bead goes through ACE before dispatch, so nothing is left for you to activate. The practices below are for devotees who wish to keep their own daily connection with the bead.
- For a single bead, chant its beej mantra, Om Hreem Namah.
- For a combination or mala, chant Om Namah Shivaya, the universal mantra for all Rudraksha, 11 times.
- You can also touch the Rudraksha to a Shivling while chanting Om Namah Shivaya 11 times.
ACE energisation & Vedic puja
Genuine is not the same as energised. A bead can be completely original & pass every authenticity test, yet still reach a devotee as just a bead.
Years of working closely with Rudraksha taught Rudralife that authentication alone was never going to be enough, so over the past three years, it has researched what it would truly take to go beyond genuine.
The result is ACE, Aura Certified Energized Rudraksha.
- 1,25,000 chants: every bead that enters ACE is energised with its own Vedic beej mantra, chanted 1,25,000 times in a controlled environment.
- Aura testing: each bead is aura-tested before & after energisation, so the process is confirmed on every bead, not just on paper.
- Sealed & protected: once ACE-approved, the bead is vacuum-sealed, stored with minimal human contact & opened only when a devotee personally selects it.
- Final puja vidhi: after selection, a final puja vidhi is performed as prescribed in the Shiva Purana.
Devotees who have received ACE beads often share that their experience went well beyond that of a regular Rudraksha. What reaches you is not only original, but tested, energised & prepared for your journey, ready to wear the moment it arrives.
Over 26 years, Rudralife has also conducted Vedic pujas for Bhagwan Shiv & the devatas. In a Vedic puja, pandits perform each puja according to Vedic vidhi vidhan, speaking the devotee’s name & gotra in the sankalp wherever they are.
The puja is streamed live on YouTube so devotees anywhere can watch, & each devotee receives mahaprasad energised in the puja itself.
